Medical vs Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery – What you need to know

November 6, 2019

Dr Audrey Looi will be presenting a Continuing Medical Education (CME) talk for Doctors at Gleneagles Hospital entitled “Medical vs Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery – What you need to know”

Talk abstract:

With an aging population and an average lifespan of 85 years, more patients are  requesting for surgery to address the problem of droopy eyelids. There is some confusion amongst both  patients and doctors regarding what constitutes a true droop or blepharoptosis. What is the difference between blepharoptosis and dermatochalasis? How do we tell the difference between neurogenic ptosis  and senile ptosis? How is the surgery performed? What should patients expect in terms of down time  and surgical risks. Importantly, when is ptosis surgery or upper blepharoplasty indicated for medical  reasons? And what are the most recent criteria set by MOH that have to be met before patients can claim insurance or Medisave coverage? These questions and more will be addressed in this talk by a senior consultant with over 20 years of experience in the field of oculoplastic surgery.
